WHY NOT DUPLEX?
Duplex printing is not recommended on simplex HP LaserJet printers.
A simplex printer prints on one side of the paper. A duplex printer
prints on both sides of the paper. The HP LaserJet Series II, IIP,
III and IIIP are simplex printers. The LaserJet IID and IIID are
duplex printers.
It is not recommended that you print on both sides of the paper by
turning over the paper and running it through the printer on the
reverse side. The results of two-side (duplex) printing with
simplex printers are unsatisfactory.
FRICTION BETWEEN SHEETS
Paper is taken from the tray and fed into the printer by the pick-
up roller. The pick-up roller is composed of a soft rubber. This
rubber pick-up roller pulls paper into the printer by applying
pressure to the surface of the top sheet of paper in the paper tray
and sliding this sheet off the stack of paper in the tray. This
results in friction between the top sheet and the second sheet of
paper in the stack.
SMEAR ON THE SECOND SIDE PRINTED
During simplex printing, unprinted paper contacts only unprinted
paper as it is drawn from the paper tray. If you were to attempt
two-sided printing in a simplex printer, the printed page would
have to be placed print side down in the paper tray. Now, as the
page is drawn into the printer, the face-down printed surface is in
contact with the sheet below it. As the pick-up roller slides this
sheet into the printer, friction between the printed surface and
the sheet beneath it causes the printed surface to smear toner on
the lower sheet. The lower sheet will show a smear when it exits
the printer. This smear is identifiable because it's always
centered on the leading end of the second side printed.
TONER SMUDGES
In addition, two-sided printing in a simplex printer will deposit
some toner on the separation pad. The separation pad is on the
underside of the paper as it feeds into the printer. The
separation pad is contacted by the paper only when paper is
initially fed. This type of toner contamination produces the same
type of smudging: on the leading end of the second side printed.
PAPER JAMS
Attempting to perform two-sided printing in a simplex printer may
also lead to excessive jamming. This is because a slight curl may
be ironed into the paper during the first printing. Paper curl
makes it difficult for the pick-up roller to feed paper into the
printer. A duplex printer uses the pick-up roller only when the
paper is initially fed into the printer so this problem is avoided.
For trouble-free duplex printing, the HP LaserJet IID, LaserJet
IIID or the LaserJet 2000 printers are the recommended solutions.
